community
storyteller
Londi Beketch Luyeye from the Democratic Republic of Congo
was the Community Storyteller in Greater Pollok for a six month period. As
part of a project funded by Greater Pollok Integration Network, offered storytelling and awareness-raising sessions to community groups and
upper primary and early secondary classes throughout the area.
Londi is well-known locally for his energetic involvement in community
activities and for the storytelling and art work he has already done in schools.
His cartoons and illustrations have appeared in The Pollok Post and
Village Storytelling Centre publications,
Buffalo
Horns,
Village Stories and Doors
Open
As Community Storyteller,
Londi offered groups the chance to hear an African
story and a sample of traditional drumming, and to see some traditional
African artefacts. He also did
some input on his work as a political cartoonist in
Kinshasa
and explained how this related to his own experience of escaping oppression and
gaining refugee status in
Scotland. He concluded by giving a
demonstration of cartoon drawing and inviting the group to try their hand at
their own.
