story through song

Sweet Music

Story through Song was an exciting after school project at Crookston Castle Primary School.  Two groups of children from primaries 5,6 and 7 worked with musician Margaret Smith, songwriter Jane McLaughlin and music teacher Wendy Wallis for an hour after school for ten weeks.

Group 1 listened to the Scottish/Scandinavian story of Master Stoorworm. a ferocious giant sea serpent who terrorises a small town.

Group 2 learned the Mexican story of Quetzalcoati, a flying snake covered in green and blue feathers, who brought music to the earth.

From the stories each group of children wrote lyrics and music for three songs, which they then recorded alongside a retelling of the stories in their own words.

The project ended with the launch of the CD in December 2005 at St James' (Pollok) Parish Church where the children performed for family and friends.

The CD is available for purchase (£5.00) by contacting Margaret
